Gatwick airport railway station was formerly used to primarily serve Gatwick's old Racecourse, and it wasn’t converted to a dedicated airport station until the late 1950’s. In the early 1970’s the system was upgraded to handle more luggage from passengers heading to the airport, and there was another major upgrade in the early 1980s, when the Gatwick express was being set up for nonstop service.

It was the first rail service to be privatized in the late 1990s, when National Express Group was awarded the franchise. The corporation maintained most of the basic operations without making any major changes. In 2008, because of franchise reorganization, the service was merged into the Southern Railway Company.

The Gatwick Express currently runs modern class 460 locomotives, with the extended services to Brighton running class 442s. Ticket prices generally range between £15.20 all the way to £43.00. Prices vary depending on your desired class, and what sort of tickets you want to buy. Children’s tickets are significantly less expensive, ranging from £7.60 to £21.60. Discounts are available, which allow groups of three or four people to travel together on the price of two tickets. There are also special rail cards that allow for discounts up to one third. Booking tickets well in advance can also save you money.

The Gatwick Express is just one way to get from the airport to London and beyond, there are also other transportation options.
